The Kerala State Electricity Board has sought permission to recover from consumers a sum of ₹1,423.64 crore through a tariff hike.

The request was made in a petition filed with the State Electricity Regulatory Commission. The existing tariff structure of all categories of consumers would need to be revised.

Revenue gap

The board has also filed the petition showing the aggregate revenue requirement and expected revenue from charges statement for the year 2014-15.

The board expects expenses during 2014-15 to touch ₹12,057.62 crore, while its income will be of the order of only ₹9,126.41 crore at the existing tariff structure.

The total revenue gap proposed for the year is ₹2,931.21 crore. Of this, ₹1,423.64 crore is proposed to be met with revision of tariff.

The commission has requested consumers/consumer groups to send their views and suggestions on the petition to the Secretary, Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission, KPFC Bhavan, C.V. Raman Pillai Road, Vellayambalam, Thiruvananthauram – 695010, to reach him before June 27.

Hearing schedule

The State Electricity Regulatory Commission has in turn announced the schedule of the public hearings on power tariff revision.

The first hearing will be in Kozhikode at the PWD Conference Hall at West Hill on June 30; the second in Kochi at the IMA Hall at Palarivattom on July 2; and the final one in Thiruvananthapuram at the Institute of Engineers Hall at Vellayambalam on July 4.

The hearings will begin at 10 a.m. in Kozhikode and Kochi and at 11 a.m. in Thiruvananthapuram.
