Priyanka Chopra starrer Mary Kom , which hit the theatres on Friday, has had a good start at the box office.

According Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the movie grossed over Rs 8 crore at the domestic box office on the first day.

The sports drama biopic, inspired by the life of the five-time boxing champion and Olympic bronze medallist M C Mary Kom, was released across 1,800 screens in the country. Directed by Omung Kumar, the movie has been co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, said, “Mary Kom has delivered a strong opening day and set a new first day benchmark for heroine-centric films. The word of mouth is positive and Priyanka’s standout performance has touched a chord with audiences across sections. The film is set for a strong weekend.”

Nearly 20 brands, including Havmor, Monte Carlo, Mother Dairy, Usha International and Iodex, among others, have tied up with the movie for branding deals.

Earlier, Eros International had entered into an international distribution agreement with Viacom18 Motion Pictures for four movies, including Mary Kom . The movie was released across 250 screens in international territories on Friday.
