With a view to enhancing customer experience ahead of the festive season, Amazon.in announced the expansion of its infrastructure network by opening its largest fulfilment centre (FC) in Karnataka and increasing its storage capacity to 3.5 million cubic feet in the State.

Amazon plans to hire 2,000 contractual workers for this FC over the next 12 months.

Storage space

Spread over 3,50,000 sq feet with nearly 2 million cubic feet of storage space, the centre situated near Attibele on the outskirts of Bengaluru will enable faster delivery to customers in the region. This is the e-tailer’s fourth FC in Karnataka which will cater to customer demand for products such as smartphones, consumer electronics, appliances, fashion and consumables (FMCG) and is one of the five FCs announced for 2018.

Amazon India will exit 2018 with more than 50 FCs in 13 States across the country with a combined storage space of close to 20 million cubic feet. Additionally, Amazon also has 15 FCs for Prime Now in four cities, of which four FCs are in Bengaluru.

“An online shopper would opt for a marketplace that can ensure speedy deliveries over another marketplace that takes longer. With the launch of this FC, we strongly believe that we will be able to better serve our customers with one-day and two-day delivery and enable the 14,000 sellers in Karnataka to use the local infrastructure, save capital and help them grow” said Akhil Saxena, Vice President, Customer Fulfilment, Amazon India.

When using Fulfilment By Amazon (FBA), sellers across the country send their products to Amazon’s FCs and once an order is placed, Amazon picks, packs and ships the order to the customer, provides customer service support and manages returns on behalf of the sellers, who save money by replacing their upfront capital expense with low variable cost and pay only for the storage space they use and the orders that Amazon fulfils for them.

Option for sellers

Amazon’s 3,80,000 sellers have the flexibility to choose the number of products they want to have stored by Amazon.

The e-tailer held the national edition of its flagship seller conference, ‘Amazon Connect’ in Bengaluru on Tuesday to engage with its sellers to enable them with the right tools, training material and understand their needs better for the upcoming festive season. Over 300 sellers from across the country attended and over 2000 sellers joined the event virtually through a live broadcast.
