Automobile makers have started the new financial year on a positive note, with most of them reporting healthy growth during April on a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis.

To start with, in the passenger vehicle segment, Maruti Suzuki reported 13 per cent growth in sales during the month, with more than 1.63 lakh units against 1.44 lakh units in April last year.

Tata Motors and M&M also reported double-digit growth during the month. While the ‘Nexon’ maker sold 17,235 units last month, up 34 per cent against 12,827 units in April 2017, the ‘Scorpio’ maker sold 21,927 units, growing by 13 per cent against 19,391 units in the corresponding month last year.

“While there were challenges in the market, strong demand for new-generation products like Tiago, Tigor, Nexon and Hexa lead the growth in April. We are attracting new customer profiles in the UV segment,” Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors, said.

Plush gets good response

Commenting on the sales numbers, Rajan Wadhera, President, Automotive Sector, M&M, said, “After a good FY18, we have had a strong start to FY19, having registered good growth for April in both the personal and commercial vehicle segments. We have also seen an encouraging response to our recent launch — the Plush New XUV500.”

In the two-wheeler segment, TVS Motor reported 18 per cent growth y-o-y, with more than 2.41 lakh units during the month against 2.05 lakh units in April last year.

Royal Enfield sold 74,627 units in April, up 18 per cent, against 58,564 units in the corresponding month last year. Suzuki sold 52,237 units last month against 36,307 units in April 2017.

Major companies, including Hero MotoCorp, Honda Motorcyle, Scooter India and Bajaj Auto, will put out their sales report on Wednesday.

In the commercial vehicle segment, Tata Motors saw robust growth, selling 36,276 units in April against 16,017 units in the same month last year. M&M and Volvo Eicher also grew by double-digit y-o-y during the month.
