Heavy Vehicle Factory (HVF) at Avadi in Chennai has set up a 16 MW grid-connected Solar Power Plant at a cost of ₹105 crore.

The solar project, set up by Navratna defence PSU Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), was launched by the Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday.

“BEL is establishing energy security for the Ordnance Factory Estates under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme by setting up utility scale grid-connected Solar Power Plants. As part of this, a 16 MW (AC) power plant, developed on a 80 acre land area, has been set up for the annual captive consumption of HVF & Engine Factory (EFA), Avadi, according to a statement of BEL.

The solar power plant will lead to reduction of SO2, NO2 and particulate matter (pm) emissions.

The plant is expected to result in annual savings of ₹ 4.5 crore for both, HVF and EFA.
