The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd has urged the Karnataka government to implement a comprehensive crop loan waiver scheme. It said the guidelines should include the farmers affected by the recent rain-related incidents.

In a memorandum to the Karnataka Minister for Cooperation, Bandeppa Kashempur, the cooperative said many farmers were affected by the recent floods in Kodagu and excessive rainfall in other districts, and there is a need to waive crop loans of such farmers without any conditions.

SR Satishchandra, Campco President, said many farmers lost their crops and farmland due to floods and landslips in Kodagu. The crops of many other farmers in Dakshina Kannada and other districts were affected by excessive rainfall during the recent monsoon. Many arecanut plantations were affected by the fruit rot disease due to excessive rainfall, he said.

Considering all these factors there is a need for the State government to formulate comprehensive guidelines to waive crop loans of such farmers in the affected regions.
