The Chief Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday registered preliminary enquiry to probe alleged payment of bribery paid to the Ministry of Defence officials in a $208 million deal to buy aircraft from Brazilian aerospace major Embraer in 2008.

“The preliminary enquiry has been registered against unknown officials of the Ministry of Defence and others. This on a reference from the said ministry on allegations related to Embraer employing an agent to facilitate various contracts,” said a senior CBI official.

Enquiries have also been registered against the contract under which three EMB-145 aircraft were procured by state-owned Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The Ministry of Defence has already sought details on the deal from DRDO after a Brazilian newspaper published reports of bribery offered to the then officials for sealing the deal. It also said Embraer is facing investigations by the US government to ascertain whether it had paid bribes to bag contracts in India and Saudi Arabia.

The paper has also said that the company has been under the scanner of the US Justice Department since 2010 when it signed a contract with the Dominican Republic.
