Centre files 41-page affidavit in the Supreme Court spelling out steps to bring autonomy in the functioning of the CBI.
The CBI has said the affidavit has been filed to place on record recommendations of the GoM on making the CBI autonomous.
The appointment of the CBI director is to be made by a committee comprising the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and CJI or an Supreme Court judge, the Centre has told the apex court.
Prime Minister will be the Chairman of the committee, the Centre added.
The Government told the Supreme Court that it will not influence in any manner probe conducted by the CBI.
The CBI director will hold the post for not more than two years. He cannot be transferred without the consent of the committee headed by PM, the Centre said in its affidavit. The CBI director shall be removed from office only by order of the President.
The Centre proposes setting up of an accountability commission to inquire into allegations against CBI officials.
