Soon, a tonne of compost generated in the city, which is sold to farmers, will fetch a reward of ₹1,500 by the Centre. The objective of the move is to boost sale of compost.
A proposal to provide market development assistance in the form of fixed financial assistance from the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers to this effect is before the Union Cabinet, said M Venkaiah Naidu, Minister for Urban Development.
Another proactive step is from the Ministry of Power, which is in the process of amending the Electricity Act-2003, to include a provision for State electricity discoms to “mandatorily purchase all power generated from municipal solid waste”.
Giving these examples at an international symposium on municipal solid waste management (MSW) here, Naidu said MSW management has been identified as one of the very important components of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The Minister added that MSW management is going through a critical phase, due to unavailability of suitable facilities to treat and dispose huge quantities generated daily, resulting in adverse impact on the environment.
Naidu added that the Government has sanctioned significant amounts for Solid Waste Management. In the next one year, 16 more waste-to-energy plants are planned to be commissioned on a PPP mode. The target is the elimination of open defecation and 100 per cent scientific disposal of municipal solid waste by October, 2019 as a tribute to Mahatma on the occasion of his 150 birth anniversary.
