The India Met Department (IMD) has maintained the outlook for the formation of a depression over the South-East Arabian Sea (around Maldives) by tomorrow, implying associated weather for Lakshadweep and India's southern peninsula. A persisting low-pressure area, the parent system, has already become 'well-marked' over the Equatorial Indian Ocean, adjoining South-West Bay of Bengal, the South Sri Lanka coast and the Maldives-Comorin area, the IMD said in a bulletin.

DEPRESSION LIKELY

It is very likely to initially move west-northwestwards and then northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over the South-East Arabian Sea (Maldives area). Satellite maps show rain clouds having buffeted most of the island nation of Sri Lanka, and some of them penetrating into the southern parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the neighbouring southern Indian peninsula.

International models indicate possibility of thundershowers for places situated as far apart as Thiruvananthapuram, Madikeri (Karnataka), Bengaluru and Hosur; Chennai and its neighbourhood, Attur, Kodumudi and Nagapattinam, in Tamil Nadu. Light to moderate showers are already being reported from Sri Lanka, given its proximity to the well-marked 'low' brewing just to its South.

CLOUDS SPREAD OUT

Cloud maps as monitored from aircraft cruising altitudes show rain clouds invading Kanyakumari, Nagercoil, Tiruchendur, Thoothukudi, Virudunagar, Madurai, Sivakasi, Ramanathapuram, Rameswaram, Karaikudi and Pattukottai. An IMD bulletin said rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places in South Tamil Nadu today and at many places tomorrow and the day after.

Similarly, rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places over South Kerala today and at many places tomorrow. Rains could lash many places of Lakshadweep with isolated heavy falls tomorrow. Most places of the archipelago could receive scattered heavy to very heavy falls on Wednesday and Thursday, the IMD said.

Squally wind speeds reaching 50 km/hr and gusting to 60 km/hr are forecast for the Comorin area and along and off the South Tamil Nadu-South Kerala coasts tomorrow and the day after.

SQUALLY WINDS

Squally winds with speeds reaching 40 km/hr and gusting to 50 km/hr are likely over the Lakshadweep area and the adjoining South-East Arabian Sea today. The wind speed will gradually increase to 40-50 km/hr, gusting to 60 km/hr tomorrow. These would further accelerate to 55 km/hr, gusting to 65 km/hr on Wednesday and Thursday, almost reaching minimal cyclonic speeds, the bulletin suggested.

The sea condition will be 'rough' to 'very rough' over Comorin-Maldives and adjoining sea areas today and tomorrow, and over the Lakshadweep area and adjoining South-East Arabian Sea from tomorrow to Thursday.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea off South Tamil Nadu, the adjoining South Kerala coast, Equatorial Indian Ocean, Comorin-Maldives, and the Gulf of Mannar area today and tomorrow.

Fishermen are also advised not to venture into the sea off the South Kerala coast, Lakshadweep area and adjoining South-East Arabian Sea from Tuesday to Thursday.
