Industrial development is dependent on optimum utilisation of minerals as a growing economy witnesses growing demand, which necessitates increased mineral excavation, said PC Purohit, Group General Manager, Rajasthan State Mines and Minerals Ltd.
He was speaking at a lecture on ‘Regulatory Framework of Environment Management for Mining in India’ at National Law University, Jodhpur, recently.
Mining concerns The campus interface was organised by BL Club in association with energy major Cairn India. He also highlighted the linkage between mining and the national economy and the relationship between mining and the environment.
Mining is detrimental to nature and hence it is imperative to have a framework of regulations of environment management for mining, he said. Tracing the evolution of regulatory agencies overseeing mining activities in the country, Purohit mentioned that the National Council for Environmental Policy, which was set up in 1972 following the UN Conference on Human Environment at Stockholm, had evolved into the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
