The inherent ability to take risks makes a leader, said K.C. Jani, Executive Director of IDBI Bank.

Delivering the 12th leadership lecture at T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) at Manipal on Saturday, he said ability to take risks distinguishes a leader from a follower.

However, risks have to be measured and calculated and always have to for the greater good. Jani said that the ability to think beyond the normal was very important for a leader.

He said patience, adaptability, flexibility and the ability to lead from the front are the other important qualities of a good leader. He underscored these factors by quoting instances from the lives of Dhirubhai Ambani, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw and Sardar Vallabahai Patel.

He focused on the qualities that a person has to cultivate in order to become a successful leader in life. He spoke on the importance of every one of them and backed them up with examples from the real world.

The lecture was followed by a question and answer session. This session touched upon the styles of leadership and the inherent conflict between leadership and traditional Indian values of contentment and sacrifice.

A.S. Vasudev Rao, Director-in-charge and Dean (Administration) of TAPMI, welcomed the gathering. Chowdari Prasad, Dean (Branding and Promotions), also spoke.
