The West Bengal tax collection for 2011-12 is set to grow by 20 per cent over that in 2010-11, much to the relief of the cash-strapped State.

Mr Vinod Kumar, Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, told media persons on Thursday that the first estimates, based on the numbers available from the State capital for 11 months till January 2012, clearly indicated a growth trend.

“Till January-end, collection in Kolkata was Rs 11,800 crore against Rs 10,000 crore collected in the comparable period in the previous financial year. This represents 18 per cent growth. District numbers are yet to be collated. But going by the February trend, we can reasonably assume that for the full year the total tax collection increase may be in the region of 20 per cent,” he added.

In 2010-11, the State's tax collection was placed at Rs 13,368 crore.

Return filing

Meanwhile, the government has allowed the second extension for filing commercial tax return till February 29. The earlier extension expired on February 15.

Mr Kumar said from an average of 8,000 to 10,000 daily submission of returns, the figure went up to 22,000 on February 15.

The Commissioner also said that during the year total number registrations shot up significantly.

At a function organised by Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he urged businessmen to file the returns early to avoid hassles.
