The proposal to set up a preventive customs commissionerate at Kakinada is under the consideration of the Union Finance Ministry and in all probability the go-ahead may come by March and the commissionerate may start functioning sometime during the next financial year, according to Mr P.K Jain, Chief Commissioner of Customs, Excise, and Service Tax, Visakhapatnam.

He was talking to presspersons here on Thursday after participating in the International Customs Day celebrations. He said that except for Visakhaptnam and Ganagavaram, the proposed commissionerate at Kakinada would cover minor ports in the State such as Kakinada, Krishnapatnam and others. It would also cover the security aspects along the coast in Andhra Pradesh, he added.

Mr Jain said the revenue in the Visakhapatnam Customs zone (Visakhapatnam, Kakinada and Krishnapatnam ports) during 2011-12 stood at Rs 7,200 crore up to January, and Visakhapatnam alone accounted for Rs 5,400 crore. The growth in collections was 27 per cent.

Awards: Earlier, he gave away awards on the occasion. Nalco was given the best exporter award and SAIL top importer for 2011-12. Merylin Shipping & Transport Ltd. and Srivalli Shipping & Transport Pvt. Ltd were given appreciation certificates and mementoes.

Mr P.V.R. Reddy, Customs Commissioner, and Mr G.V.L Satya Kumar, Deputy Chairman of Visakhapatnam port, participated in the function.
