Union HRD Minister M. M. Pallam Raju today laid the foundation stone of the first National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Arunachal Pradesh at its permanent site in picturesque Jote village near here.
“The creation of NIT has ensured that some seats for admission to undergraduate courses will be available for students from Arunachal Pradesh, which is bound to uplift the economics of locality, directly or indirectly, and help in enhancing the human development index in the State,” Raju said after laying the stone.
The institute, which has been run out of a temporary campus at Yupia since its establishment in July 2010, offers undergraduate courses in Computer Science, Electronics & Electrical and Electronics & Computer Engineering.
The Union Minister said the NITs, which were earlier known as RECs, have been making an excellent contribution towards producing trained human resources in the field of engineering.
“In recent years we have been working towards restructuring these institutions to play an even greater role in national development and to become world-class institutions, not only in engineering manpower development, but also in the development of new technologies through research and innovation,” he said.
Raju, who arrived here yesterday, visited the Rajiv Gandhi University and assured his Ministry’s support for the infrastructural and academic development of the central varsity.
While suggesting that the faculty members and the students strive harder and influence colleges and educational institutions around them with their knowledge and skills, he asked them to fit into the larger game plan of the Central Government’s ‘Look East’ policy.
