Australia, Canada and New Zeland are seeing a steady increase in the number of Indian students pursing higher studies, but the US continues to be the most preferred destination, according to industry experts.

“The US has always been the most-sought-after destination among Indian students, but New Zealand, Canada and Australia have relaxed their policies and are also offering work permit for up to 3 years. All these factors will lead to an increase in the number of students going to these countries,” said Rohit Sethi, Director, ESS Global, an overseas education consulting firm.

Recently, Australia announced an ‘Additional Temporary Graduate’ visa under which international students who graduate from the regional campus of a registered university will be given an extra year of post-study work rights. “Lot of countries are trying to tap India and China as majority of the students from these two countries go abroad for higher education,” said Naveen Chopra, Founder, The Chopras, a study abroad consultant.

Many universities in non-English speaking countries are also offering popular courses in English, he added.

According to the experts, the number of Indian students going to abroad for higher education is increasing at 15 -20 per cent every year.

“The US always been the top preferred destination, however, Singapore is also becoming a preferred destination for Indian students as there is a provision of government subsidy which is being offered to the international student,” said Abhishek Singhal, Co-Founder of UnivAdmitHelp.

He said engineering courses are by far the biggest attraction for Indian students who go to abroad for higher education followed by business (which includes management etc).
