‘Engineers have an edge over science grads in landing first jobs’

Graduates in engineering have better than average prospects of finding a job after finishing their degree, according to Ajay Prabhu, COO, QuEST Global, a leading engineering services firm.

In contrast, graduates in maths, life sciences and physical sciences face more difficulty in finding their first jobs, Prabhu said here. Last year, graduates with these degrees were among the least likely to have found a full-time job four months after graduation. It is also a fact that engineering graduates command a better starting salary than the others, according to Prabhu.

This is purely because of the umpteen opportunities that have been thrown open by the fast-growing engineering services sector. Singapore-headquartered QuEST Global, which has a development centre in Thiruvananthapuram, is one among the leading pure-play engineering services companies operating from four centres in India.

Jobs on offer

The other centres are in Bengaluru, Belgaum and Chennai. It has delivery centres also in Italy, Japan, Germany, France, Singapore, the US, the UK and Spain.

Prabhu said the company is on the lookout for 2,000 additional skilled candidates for their Kerala operations in Technopark here, and 12,000 globally.

“As part of its Vision 2020 programme, the company plans to enter the ‘$1-billion turnover club’ by 2020. This will be achieved through organic and non-organic growth,” he said. The company will take its headcount to 20,000 professionals by 2020 globally; the count in Thiruvananthapuram will be doubled from the current 2,000 to 4,000 during the same period.

QuEST Global will seek to drive passion for innovation amongst students across reputed academic institutions to develop a sustainable pool of talented graduate engineers.

S Narayanan, Vice-President and Centre Head here, said QuEST Global would celebrate its 20th anniversary this year with different programmes.

It would be keenly looking at skilled professionals joining the company, which currently operates from its own building in the Technopark campus.
