About 300 government and government-aided schools in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) limits would be exempted of paying property tax from now on, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said today.
Arrears of property tax of these schools from as far back as the fourth quarter of 1979 were also exempted as per a decision taken at a mayor-in-council meeting during the day.
Chatterjee said the step would cost KMC several crores of rupees.
These schools take very little or no fees from its students, most of whom come from financially backward classes.
The school buildings are mostly maintained by money from MLALAD funds.
