It was a hat trick of wins for the ICFAI Business School (IBS), Hyderabad in the area of global case study competitions recently.

The duo of Namratha V Prasad and G V Muralidhara won the Latin America Business Case category in the 2014 EFMD case writing competition for the case study, Chile’s Conchay Toro: A Silver bullet for the global market. It describes the efforts of Concha to build its brand image in the global wine market at a time when Chilean wines were generally perceived as cheap and it succeeded.

The second winners are Manish Agarwal and Debapratim Purkayastha for studying the dilemma faced by Jim Yong Kim (Kim), President of the World Bank Group, related to International Finance Corporation funding of the Tata Mundra Power Plant in the Sustainable Finance track in the oikos Global Case Writing Competitions, 2015.

In the same competition, The Study Apple and Conflict Minerals: Ethical Sourcing for Sustainability, authored by Adapa Srinivasa Rao and Debapratim Purkayastha, won the second prize.

The case study is about the controversy faced by Apple regarding the sourcing of conflict minerals that were used to manufacture its products. In order to face the controversy, Apple took a number of initiatives like forcing the smelters in its supply chain to get certified as conflict free and providing the required support to analyze the sources of their minerals. Despite the efforts of Apple, some critics alleged that its response was too little and too late.

In addition the study “From Sweatshops to Sustainability: Walmart’s Journey in Bangladesh, authored by Surojit Mahato and Indu Perepu, won the Runner Up prize. It revolves around the readymade garment industry in Bangladesh, which contributed to more than 80 per cent of exports from the country, but continued to function with inadequate safety systems.

Two major accidents, one in 2012 (factory fire at Tazreen) and the other in 2013 (collapse of Rana Plaza building, which housed several factories), killed more than 1,200 workers brought to the fore the plight of the workers in the industry. The case discusses the implications of this occurrence on Walmart and the garment industry in Bangladesh.
