The Indian Institute of Technology (Hyderabad) at Kandi, Sangareddy district is all set for the seventh Convocation on August 5.

As it gets ready for the convocation, the IIT-H had drawn up plans for the next phase of growth in another five years. It is targeting to double the student strength to 5,000 from the present 2,500 in different Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate and Research programmes.

Located about 60 kilometres from Hyderabad, IIT-H has emerged a premier institute in the second wave of IITs established in 2008. “The institute is currently witnessing the next phase of construction. We expect this to be completed in the next four to five years. The expansion will allow us to onboard more students,” U B Desai, Director of IIT-H, told BusinessLine .

“Research and Post-Graduate streams are a major focus for the institute. We are graduating 57 PhDs in the convocation to be held on Sunday. The number will go up to 80 and 100, the year after that. The number of PhDs awarded is steadily increasing,” Desai said.

The institute has been promised a financial assistance of about Rs 1,500 crore, which includes funds for research and infrastructure development, from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The expansion plan will include a library, main building complex, research and development facilities and a convention centre coming up in the next five years. “As we get access to the new infrastructure, we can start derivative departments, branching out into specialised streams within the core departments,” Desai said. “We are presently incubating 10 companies. Though the number is small, the spectrum is varied. We have companies working in the energy, 5G, chemical engineering, healthcare, computer sciences and physics,” he added.
