India needs to have more institutes in the world university rankings and, for that, research needs to be given an impetus, NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya said on Tuesday.
He was speaking at the Higher Education Summit organised by Ficci. Panagariya urged that there was an imperative need to link academia, industry and research with higher education institutes to upgrade the quality of higher education in the country.
Panagariya said that, so far, educational institutes have primarily focused on teaching, while separate councils took charge of research, but this model has not been very successful. Research faculty should be present in the university to enable students to keep up to date about new innovations and technology.
Talking about the challenges in higher education, Panagariya said the compensation in teaching jobs is also a reason for the lack of interest among professionals towards teaching, as the salary levels are not comparable.
