That wealth is created from waste is not new. But sensitising school students and helping them be a part of the waste segregation ordeal is what the Coimbatore Corporation is attempting to do.
The corporation has launched a competition — Uram Seiya Virumbu — to create awareness on segregation of waste and preparation of compost from wet, degradable waste.
Launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the competition will involve students across the city. The corporation has joined hands with Aram Foundation, an NGO to drive this initiative and help students in compost preparation.
The competition is open till December-end. To encourage participation, the Corporation has announced prizes, including two gold coins a day for as many families participating in the programme.
The students have to prepare the compost from the wet, degradable waste and hand over the dry, recyclable waste at their respective schools from where the Corporation will collect the packets.
Every day during the competition period, after field verification, the Corporation will award prizes to deserving students, said K Vijayakarthikeyan, Corporation Commissioner, Coimbatore.
