In examples of industry-academia linkage, the University of Hyderabad has inked two agreements with the Apollo Hospitals Group and the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences to focus on healthcare.
A letter of understanding was exchanged between the University and Apollo Hospitals Educational and Research Foundation. The stress will be on developing cost-effective treatment methods and innovations in healthcare research.
The Chief Executive Officer of Apollo Foundation, Seemant Jauhari, explained the different business models in healthcare research. He said the tie-up with the university would aim to facilitate interactions between the faculty and clinicians of the hospital to conduct joint research projects, workshops and training.
The University has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nizam's Institute with similar intent. The agreements are part of BioQuest 2016 being held at the campus. The Director, Nizam's Institute, Manohar, underlined the need for translational research. There should be interaction between scientists and clinicians to bring new and effective medicines for various life threatening diseases.
Delivering the inaugural address at the event, Anula Jayasuriya, Managing Director, Evolvence India Life Sciences Fund, San Francisco, explained the importance of combining scientific discovery with improved health. The healthcare vision was right medicine-right time-right patient. There was also a growing scope for precision/ personalised medicine, especially in treating various cancers.
