The University of Auckland from New Zealand is offering free online courses to students from around the world. The university will be partnering with FutureLearn, a UK-based consortium founded by the Open University, to develop and deliver Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

The University of Auckland will contribute courses to the FutureLearn platform and work with other globally renowned partners in developing pedagogically-driven innovation in blended learning. This e-learning project aims to attract a large and diverse international audience.

Professor John Morrow, University of Auckland Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), said the FutureLearn membership will provide focus forthe university’s engagement with MOOCS in the near future.

“We welcome this important global collaboration which will increase our reach and make our high-quality content and courses available to anyone worldwide,” he said.

“Our membership of the FutureLearn consortium provides exciting opportunities for collaboration with leading educational institutions committed to utilising learning technologies to enhance educational outcomes,” he added.

Ziena Jalil, Regional Director – South and South East Asia, Education New Zealand, said, “The education sector is seeing new trends develop at a rapid pace. This can be attributed to the technological advancement in the field of education. Massive Open Online Courses have created awareness about the impact of online education to students from all over the world. MOOCs allow students from across the world to have access to a broad selection of free, high-quality courses from some of the world’s best educational institutions. We are delighted that the University of Auckland is contributing to this programme.”
