The BJP’s Gujarat President Jitubhai Vaghani has been barred from holding public meetings, processions, rallies, roadshows and interviews, and making any public utterances in media (electronic, print and social media) in connection with the on-going elections for three days from 4 pm on May 2 .

The Election Commission’s order said the ban applies to any meeting in any part of the country.

‘Inflammatory speech’

Vaghani was found to have spoken in an inflammatory way and violated the Model Code of Conduct while addressing party workers in Surat, on April 7.

Meanwhile, the Commission has asked Congress star campaigner Navjot Singh Sidhu to submit an explanation, till 6 pm on May 2, as to why action should not be initiated against him for violating the code of conduct.

As per the Commission’s letter to the Congress leader, he is accused of violating the poll code in a speech he delivered in Ahmedabad on April 17, during which he made “objectionable statements.”

He said while China was laying down a rail line under the ocean, India was producing ‘ chor chowkidars ’ in an alleged reference to the Prime Minister.

The letter also said if Sidhu does not give an explanation on time, the Commission will take a decision without referring to him.
