The electoral picture in Maharashtra is getting clearer in the late afternoon, with the BJP and its allies leading in 40 seats in the parliamentary elections, while the Congress along with its alliance partners is ahead in seven seats.
In the prestigious Baramati seat, which has always been won by NCP’s Sharad Pawar family, the tradition continued with Pawar’s daughter, Supriya Sule, winning the seat with 6,79,803 votes. The runner-up was BJP candidate, Kanchan Kool, who also received over 5,26,979. She lost by a 1.5 lakh margin. However, for Kool to get over five lakh votes in the NCP stronghold is a significant milestone in the electoral politics of western Maharashtra.
In the North Mumbai seat, cine star Urmila Matondkar, who is fighting on a Congress ticket, is trailing behind BJP’s Gopal Shetty by a massive three lakh votes.
Sharad Pawar, addressing mediapersons, said the party was leading in four seats and was hopeful of winning another four seats. On the BJP winning on the national scale, he said the verdict of the people should be accepted.
