The authorities of New Mangalore Port rescued a fisherman, about 20 nautical miles off Panambur beach, on Thursday. The fisherman had accidentally fell off his fishing boat which went unnoticed by other crew members then.
As soon as it came to the notice of the crew of the fishing boat that their co-worker is missing, they alerted all the other boats and police about the incident and searched for him in vain.
Yathish Baikampady, Chief Executive Officer of Panmbur Beach Tourism Development Project, said in a press release here that in the meantime a specific message of a person in distress being spotted in mid-sea by a merchant vessel passing the shipping lanes off the west coast was received by the New Mangalore Port authorities.
