Jharkhand is to roll out the Food Security Act, which will cover 86 per cent of the State population. Beneficiary families will get 5 kg of rice or wheat for each member of the family per month, with 25 kg being the upper limit. Rice will be given at ₹3 per kg and wheat at ₹2. Food for thought?

Those violating the rule will find the authorities swooping down on them to impound their vehicles under section 206 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Germany is weighing two alternative proposals on how to cut CO2 emissions from the energy sector and plans to make a decision today. The economy ministry will decide between its original proposal — to impose a penalty on the oldest and most polluting coal power plants — and a suggestion from trade union IG BCE to gradually shut down coal power stations.
