Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will present the Railway Budget today. He has the tough task of deciding whether to raise fares and freight rates as railway finances come under strain. A section in the ministry is against any such move with elections round the corner in four States and diesel prices on the downslide.

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who is serving a five-year sentence at the Yerawada prison in Pune in the 1993 serial blasts case, will be released today. He will be released 103 days ahead of the official end of his prison term on grounds of ‘good conduct’.

The cross-examination of terrorist David Coleman Headley is slated to begin today. Defence attorney Wahab Khan had informed the special court, where Headley was examined by the public prosecutor earlier this month, that he required four days to cross-examine him.

The 41st national conference of the AITUC, the trade union wing of the CPI, will begin in Coimbatore from today. About 2,500 delegates will attend the four-day conference which will discuss issues confronting workers. The proposed amendments to the labour law will also be discussed .
