The criminal defamation case filed by BJP chief Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah against news portal The Wire will come up for hearing at a metropolitan court in New Delhi. The case pertains to a report which claimed that the turnover of a company owned by Jay Shah grew exponentially after the party came to power in 2014. Shah had earlier said that he will also file a Rs 100 crore civil defamation suit.

General Insurance Corporation of India's Rs 11,370-crore initial public offer opens today. The company has set the price band at Rs 855-912 a share. The national reinsurer will dilute 14.22 per cent of its post-offer paid-up equity share capital. Of this, the government will dilute 12.26 per cent stake and the balance 1.96 per cent will be ceded by the Corporation itself. The IPO closes on Oct 13.

The bypoll to the Gurdaspur Assembly seat in Punjab will be held today. Eleven candidates are in the fray, though the main fight is among BJP candidate Swarn Salaria, Congress' Sunil Kumar Jakhar, who is the Punjab Congress President, and Aam Aadmi Party's Major General Suresh Kumar Khajuria (retd). The bypoll was necessitated by the death of actor and BJP MP Vinod Khanna. The result will be announced on October 15.

India face a tricky campaign-opener against Japan in the men’s Asia Cup hockey tournament starting in Dhaka today. The Asia Cup is the newly appointed coach Sjoerd Marijne’s first test. Last edition’s runner-up India, led by midfielder Manpreet Singh, will be eyeing a perfect start to their campaign in Pool A which also features arch—rivals Pakistan and hosts Bangladesh. Pool B consists of defending champions Korea, Malaysia, China and minnows Oman.

The second edition of the ICC Women's World Cup ODI kicks off in Trinidad with the series between Sri Lanka and West Indies. Two other ODIs will be played on October 13 and 15. The second edition was launched in New Delhi on Monday. The Women’s Championship will be played in the same format as the inaugural edition, which was held from 2014-16, with all the eight sides – Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies – taking on each other in a series of three ODIs on a home or away basis. India is scheduled to play three matches in South Africa from February 5-10 in Round 1 of the competition.
