Bengaluru-headquartered e-commerce major Flipkart is planning to set up a 4.5-million (45 lakh) sq ft logistics park in Karnataka.  The e-tailer is scouting for a 100-acre land parcel near Bengaluru to set up the park.

While Flipkart did not disclose the exact location of the park or the total amount that it will invest in the park, a source who has worked with several e-commerce firms to set up their fulfilment centres around the country including Bengaluru said, the cost of one acre alone will amount to a minimum of ₹2 crore and could go up to ₹5 crore, which will amount to an investment of ₹200–500 crore in land acquisition alone.

The two most likely locations that the e-commerce major will choose to locate the park are in the vicinity of the Bengaluru International Airport in Devanahalli for easy freight logistics and Budigere in east Bengaluru.  “The Exit Gate number 3, a part of the second phase of the Bengaluru International Airport will connect to the Budigere road, which is being developed as a 180 feet wide double road,” said the same source.

Flipkart’s fully-integrated park, will house several fulfilment centres, which will improve the supply chain efficiency and reduce costs by mechanised warehousing technology.  It will act as a freight aggregation and distribution hub and will leverage technology for intelligent transport systems.

The park is expected to create 5,000 direct jobs by 2020 and 15,000 indirect jobs through peripheral industries, supporting logistics activities such as trucking, C&F services and so on, by 2020.

Flipkart intends to build the logistics park on the principle of sustainability to curb any wastage of valuable natural resources, where it will be a net power exporter by deploying solar panels on warehouse roofs, replenish groundwater table through rain water harvesting and reduce pollution with waste recycling facilities.
