The forest fire which broke out on the Gudilova hill range in the Anandapuram mandal near the city on Thursday evening was still raging on Friday evening in spite of the best efforts of the Navy personnel and the fire department officials and staff to bring it under control throughout the day. Four naval helicopters were pressed into service to douse the fire.
It is suspected that a Kartika deepam (lamp) lit on Thursday in the ancient temple on the hill range may have triggered the fire, as the nearby areas were full of dry woods. The Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary sought the help of the Navy to put out the fire.
