Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's (93) health has severely deteriorated and he is in a critical condition. He has been admitted in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi since the past nine weeks.
"Unfortunately his condition has worsened over the last 24 hours. His condition is critical and he is on life support system," said Aarti Vij, Chairperson, Media and Protocol Division in AIIMS.
Vajpayee was wheeled into AIIMS and lodged in first floor Intensive Care Unit after he suffered an infection in his urinary tract.
He had undergone multiple dialysis cycles. Vajpayee has diabetes and only one functional kidney. He later suffered a stroke in 2009 and since then has dementia.
He has been admitted in AIIMS since June 11.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) President Amit Shah and Union Railways and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal visited AIIMS on August 15 to inquire after Vajpayee's health.
