Former West Bengal Assembly speaker and CPI-M leader Hashim Abdul Halim passed away today. He was suffering from old-age-related illness, the sources added.
Halim, 80, had been the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly for 29 years (1982 to 2011).
A noted lawyer, Halim, had served as the Law and Justice Minister from 1977 to 1982 – the first five years of the Left Front rule in the State.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today condoled the death of Adbul Halim.
“Deepest condolences to the family of long-serving former Speaker of WB Assembly Hashim Abdul Halim. Speaker Biman Banerjee is paying condolences. As I am not in Kolkata, Partha Chatterjee will be paying condolences,” the Chief Minister tweeted.
