Geological Survey of India (GSI) is planning to recruit around 700 people in the next two years.

N.R. Ramesh, Deputy Director General and Head of Natural Energy Resources of GSI, said this at a national seminar on ‘Coastal environments and their management’, organised by Mangalore University here on Tuesday.

Stating that all the recruitments will be done through UPSC (Union Public Service Commission), he said GSI recruited around 270 people in 2011-12. During the current year, it is planning to recruit another 300. In the next two years, GSI is planning to recruit around 700 people.

Demand for students

GSI is planning to take up many programmes during 12th and 13th Plan period. In such a situation, there will be good demand for students with geology background, he said.

However, Ramesh expressed concern that not many graduates with geology background are coming out from universities in Karnataka.

Speaking on the occasion, T.C. Shivashankara Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, said that it is now difficult to get students for the study of basic science.

The number of students enrolling for the post-graduate programme in geology is much less than the actual strength in that department. The same trend is also witnessed in the geology departments of other universities, he said.

M. Sudhakar, Advisor to the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, who inaugurated the seminar, said that globally there will be shortage of people with an understanding of earth science in the next two decades.
