HashLearn to launch free online coaching for UPSC exams

Personal Learning Assistant programmeaims to cover 300 million students

HashLearn, India’s first ‘One Subscription, All Exams’ membership club, aiming to build a Personal Learning Assistant (PLA) for 300 million students, will launch coaching for the students taking various competitive examinations conducted by the UPSC by the end of 2018.

The procedure will be the same as NEET and JEE Main, which are the company’s main plank at present. “We will be providing free, live video classes for UPSC-conducted examinations. For homework and tests, students will have to enrol for HashLearn’s ‘Passport’ at ₹499 for a lifetime subscription,” Jayadev Gopalakrishnan, CEO, told BusinessLine .

Angel funding

The Bengaluru-based start-up, aiming to make coaching affordable, had raised money from India’s leading angel investors including Binny Bansal (Flipkart founder), Bhavish Aggarwal (Ola founder), Rajan Anandan (MD, Google India/SE Asia). “If necessary, we may raise more funding under Series A,” he said.

Launched in 2015 as a one-stop solution for all competitive examinations, HashLearn’s work flow is like booking a cab. Whenever the student has a doubt, he/she can upload an image of the problem for which answer is sought. The student is then connected to a topic specialist for a solution at the earliest. The fee for this service, per session, is deducted from the prepaid balance or added to the bill.

The HashLearn app currently facilitates coaching in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology for classes VIII to XII. It also helps students preparing for 14 different entrance exams, including JEE and NEET, Gopalakrishnan said. Nearly two lakh students are getting free online coaching this way at present. HashLearn’s coaching for clerical, banking and CAT exams will begin in July.

About future plans, Gopalakrishnan said HashLearn is building an end-to-end digital education infrastructure. It is digitising Indian education across all stakeholders — content publishers, coaching, tutors, parents and others — and bringing them together onto an intelligent, cohesive technology platform delivered as a PLA for the student.

“Our goal is to make a customised learning path accessible to each of the 300 million students in India,” he added.
