Honda expects this year to be one of its busiest with three new car launches after a year-long gap in FY17.

Apart from the Amaze, the company will also bring back the Civic (a premium sedan) and the CR-V (an SUV). The Civic was phased out in 2013.

According to Rajesh Goel, Senior Vice-President and Director, Marketing and Sales, Honda Cars India, a new-gen version will give a leg-up to the Civic, especially with a set of loyal user base.

“The market is expected to grow at 7-8 per cent. We expect to grow higher than the market. In terms of new launches, this (year) will be amongst the busiest,” he said on the sidelines of the launch of the new Amaze in Kolkata.

The company registered an 8 per cent growth in FY17. Honda had at one point been the third largest in the country, but lost market share to other players such as Mahindra and Tata, sources say.

The new launches are expected to help the car maker gain back market share in India.

Electric vehicles

According to Goel, the car- maker is ready with the technology, but it is yet to decide on a timeline for the launch of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. Infrastructure (such as batteries and charging points) along with government policy will play a key role in influencing the Japanese automobile company’s decision.

Honda already has declared its intent that by 2030, two-thirds of the global unit sales will be based on non-conventional energy technologies.

“We already have the technology with us,” Goel said.
