Mendu Vishnu Vardhana Rao, Sr. Grade Deputy Director & Biostatistician from National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad has been appointed as Director, National Institute of Medical Statistics (NIMS), New Delhi under Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The 55-year-old scientist is well-known in the field of biostatistics, computational biology and nutrition. He was a student of Osmania University, Hyderabad where he has completed his M.Sc and Ph.D. (Statistics) and also obtained M.Tech (IT) degree .
Rao’s appointment is one of the seven director’s of national Institutes that the Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR) announced on Wednesday.
As Director of NIMS, he will be responsible for spearheading research in the field of Medical Statistics that could be used in formulating National Policies towards achieving the government targets in the area of health and nutrition.
One of the important areas of work of the NIMS is the Clinical Trial Registry of India, which stores data of thousands of clinical trials of drugs that take place. Similarly, the Institute is a storehouse of information ans medical statistics.
“My immediate focus would be on applying big data analytical and also strengthening the clinical trial resource base so that the Institute can play a bigger and significant role in national healthcare policies,” Vishnu Vardhan told BusinessLine .
With 26 years of experience at NIN, the premier & oldest Institute under the ICMR, Vishnu Vardhan, who expects to take charge on December 20 is confident to expand the role and sharpen the focus of the Institute. NIMS has been without a full fledged Director for close to a year now.
The other directors appointed are: R Hemalatha, National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad; Manisha Madkaikar, National Institute of Immunohaemotology, Mumbai; Manoj V Murhekar, National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai; Shripad A Patel, National JALMA Institute for Leprosy & othe Mycobacterial Diseases, Agra; Kamlesh Sarkar, National Institute of Occupational Health, Ahmedabad and Samiran Panda, National AIDS Research Institute, Pune.
