India is pushing for energy justice on a global platform, similar to the efforts that have been made within the country, said Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan.

Speaking at the first ministerial at Petrotech 2019, Pradhan highlighted how there is a big shift of energy consumption from Europe to Asia.

“Our philosophy of sustainable development goals has given us and the world community a target to attain. India is committed to fulfilling this global goal in an Indianised version. Energy justice is our strategy,” he said.

Pradhan highlighted how the government has been providing cooking gas and electricity connections nationwide in an attempt to democratise the reach of hydrocarbons. These efforts will boost the country’s overall output as more members of the family will have the time to engage in economic activities, he added.

TAPI pipeline project

The need for greater energy access, and the utility of the proposed Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline for the same, was seconded by Afghanistan’s Minster of Mines and Petroleum, Nargis Nehan.

Also speaking at the ministerial, she said: “Afghanistan is part of the $9.9-billion TAPI project. The project has reached Afghanistan and an agreement between the government of Afghanistan and the project implementing partner will be signed in the near future. Land acquisition and project related studies such as environment ground survey for the transmission of pipelines have been initiated. An action plan will be signed for the project implementation.”

Nehan added that the growing population of Afghanistan will need sustainable and reliable energy solutions.
