India’s initiatives to connect with its neighbours have been focused on furthering the energy trade.

Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Skill Development, Dharmendra Pradhan said, “Energy is fast emerging as a tool of non-traditional connectivity and efforts are being made by the centre to foster this activity through bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas centre. India is working with Bangladesh to set up a gas grid and to supply high speed diesel through pipelines.”

“Currently we are supplying high speed diesel through rail track from Siliguri in India to Parbatipur in Bangladesh and are in the process of constructing a 30 kilometre long product pipeline from uninterrupted supply,” he added.

Pradhan was speaking at a conference on assessing India's connectivity with its neighbourhood organised jointly by the Vivekananda Foundation and the Confederation of Indian Industries.

“Also, Indian companies are parking on working to connect India’s gas grid to Bangladesh and supply gas for power generation at the Khulna Power Plant…Additionally, efforts are underway by Indian companies to build an LNG terminal in Bangladesh,” he said.

“There are also plans to import LNG at Bangladesh and transport through road and pipeline to the North Eastern part of India while catering to the demand of Bangladesh,” he added.

“With Sri Lanka, India is jointly developing Trincomalee oil storage tank and also working on setting up LNG terminal with a 500 MW LNG fired power plant near Colombo. There is also a proposal to develop the City Gas Distribution market in Sri Lanka,” Pradhan said.
