The Indian Geophysical Union (IGU) has instituted a young scientist award in memory of noted geophysicist Janardhan G Negi from 2018. The award will recognise outstanding contributions by scientists below 35 years of age. A decision to this effect was taken at the 54th IGU annual convention in Hyderabad early this week.
At the three-day event held at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), well-known seismologist Arun Bapat delivered the Negi memorial lecture on progress in earthquake prediction. Negi had a distinguished career with the NGRI and made some fundamental contributions in theoretical geophysics and the understanding of complex phenomenon such as Deccan Volcanism, Magnetic Pole reversals and fault zones as key triggers for major earthquakes.
