Private universities need to focus more on research to enter QS World University Rankings, said Ashwin Fernandes, CEO, QS I GAUGE. In the recently announced QS World University Rankings, 24 Indian universities made it to the list.

“The problem is that if a private institute in India wants to do research, it faces various hurdles. Traditionally, these institutes are seen as money-making businesses. So the government does not support them,” Fernandes said.

No govt funds

He added that the government gives autonomy to institutes of eminence but does not give them money.

Research plays a vital role in the ranking framework, with 40 per cent weightage. “One might have good teaching environment and better infrastructure but the research is of utmost importance. In this year’s ranking, 17 out of 24 institutions have increased their research reputation,” Fernandes said.

This is the first time five private Indian universities were selected in the QS World University Ranking. They are Amity, Manipal, BITS Pilani, Amrita and VIT.

Lag period

“One also needs to understand that research has a lag period of at least 3-4 years. So, if a work is started today, its results would be visible only after 2-3 years,” Fernandes said.

Also, in a bid to bring international perspective to Indian higher education, QS has come up with the ‘QS I Gauge’, a rating framework designed for India. The rating framework is much more detailed than the ranking process.
