BJP MP Subramanian Swamy, who has been critical of the approach of controlling inflation at the cost of economic growth, today said only a person with “nasty mission” to undo India would hold a different view.

Swamy, a vocal critic of Raghuram Rajan’s policy stance of not lowering interest rate in order to control inflation, today took to Twitter to say he has taught economics to Americans for over 50 years.

“Only an illiterate in economics or a person with a nasty mission to undo India would hold a different view,” Swamy tweeted.

Replying to a follower’s tweet on his comments yesterday on Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz’s statement that India should focus more on growth than being overly obsessed with inflation, the Rajya Sabha MP tweeted that he did not need any “lifeline” support of anyone to establish his views.

“Lifeline? I don’t need crutches like other non PT Indians. I have taught economics to Americans spread over 50 years,” he tweeted.

PT in his tweet refers to ‘Patriotic Tweeple’.

Swamy also retweeted posts by his followers on Stiglitz’s comments that “excessive focus on inflation almost inevitably leads to higher unemployment levels and lower growth”.

He said in another tweet that “India should focus on economic growth and not obsess with inflation”.

Yesterday, he had attacked “Lutyen’s journalists” for not taking note of Stiglitz’s comments as well as the report of the US State Department that had said India’s growth is overstated.

“Lutyen journos silent on US State Dept stating growth rate over-estimated and Stiglitz says growth more important than controlling inflation,” Swamy had tweeted yesterday.
