Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will visit India from February 15 to February 17, according to a press release by the Ministry of External Affairs. This will be Rouhani's maiden visit to India since coming to power in August 2013. The meeting is expected to strengthen New Delhi’s relationship with the larger Arab world.
Iran President will hold meetings with his Indian counterpart and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 17, the release said. He will also be accorded a ceremonial reception on Saturday.
The visit comes at a time when the US, under President Donald Trump, has kept Iran on tenterhooks with repeated threats of trade sanctions as well as threats to pull out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement.
PM Modi had visited Iran in May 2016 and signed an agreement to develop the Chabahar port to boost regional and maritime links. This also marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in the past 15 years.
