Mahindra Electric, part of the Mahindra Group, has signed an agreement with Auroville, a township near Puducherry that has been focussing on sustainable practices, to pilot an integrated sustainable mobility ecosystem for a community.

A memorandum of understanding was signed at the Auroville on Tuesday, coinciding with the World Environment Day.

As part of the agreement, Mahindra Electric and Auroville will work with IISc (Indian Institute of Science), Puducherry Smart City Development Ltd and GoGreen BOV to develop a holistic ecosystem that will involve Mahindra’s electric vehicles, smart parking systems, charging infrastructure and its software integration platform Nemo.

Mahindra will be deploying Nemo, a cloud-enabled mobility platform, in a community programme. Nemo platform provides contextual information about battery and vehicle performance. It will also address individual requirements of varied segments of urban mobility including car and ride sharing and corporate commuting.

The two-year pilot programme will also enable mobility models such as ride sharing, ride hailing and self-drive rentals.

Mahindra Electric also unveiled its energy storage solution, which is expected to play a key role in enabling the ecosystem including charging infrastructure, EV parking, and an EV support centre. It will also help tap renewable power in order to become a complete green solution.

“Our endeavour has been to make these electric mobility solutions work for the society and we chose to work with Auroville as they have been a pioneer in embracing sustainable solutions. We want to do a lot of pilots and only through such pilots we can learn, optimise and create value to the community. Once we are successful here, this can be a role model for other cities,” said Mahesh Babu, CEO, Mahindra Electric.

On an average, Auroville attracts about 5000 visitors a day. Also, on an ongoing basis there are a lot of researchers, interns and others.

The partners expect 100-500 people to use Mahindra’s electric vehicles and other services for their mobility needs during this period.
