A.B. Subbaiah, who was part of Indian hockey team in two Olympics, will be awarded honorary doctorate by Mangalore University.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, T.C. Shivashankara Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, said that Subbaiah, Kadri Gopalnath (saxophonist), and noted scholar Chandrashekhara Kambara will be presented with honorary doctorate awards at the 31st annual convocation of the university on February 23.

Born in Madikeri of Kodagu district in Karnataka, Subbaiah represented the national team in more than 285 international matches from 1988-98. He represented India in Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

Shivashankara Murthy said that Kadri Gopalnath is one of the pioneers of Carnatic music on saxophone. Born in Mangalore, Gopalnath has the distinction of being the first Carnatic musician to perform in BBC promenade concert in London during 1994.

Chandrashekhara Kambara was the founder Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University at Hampi in Karnataka. He was awarded the Jnanpith in 2011, he said.

As many as 84 candidates will be awarded doctor of philosophy degrees at the convocation on February 23. Apart from this, 36 gold medals and 55 cash prizes will be given away at the convocation.

T. Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, will deliver the convocation address, Shivashankara Murthy said.
