Medical fraternity has stepped up its protest against the Supreme Court ruling banning the 50 per cent service quota reserved for higher education in medicine.
Following the ruling, medical colleges, primary health centres and doctors decided to boycott primary health centres (PHC) and stop performing elective surgeries in hospitals.
The protest that has entered the 14th day saw several political leaders, over 100 medical students and several organisations like the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association, Tamil Nadu Medical Students Association and Service Doctors Welfare Association joining the agitation.
Ravindranath GR, General Secretary, Doctors’ Association for Social Equality, that organised the protest in Chennai, today said the agitation and disruption in medical services will continue till the State and the Centre back the 50 per cent reservation for service doctors by bringing in an Ordinance. “But, there will be no hindrance to emergency care and other life-saving activities during the protest as many doctors join the demonstration only after duty hours,” he added.
