The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday approved Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) ₹12,156 crore budget for fiscal 2018-19.

A press statement issued by MMRDA said that a sizable chunk of funds has been earmarked for projects such as Metro corridors, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, development of Mumbai Metropolitan Region with flyovers, creek bridges, road network and development of water resources besides prioritizing the Bandra-Kurla Complex to improve its connectivity and infrastructure.

MMRDA has made a budgetary provision of ₹4,700 crore for the seven metro projects, which are in various stages of development across the Mumbai metropolitan region.

A provision of ₹2,100-crore has been made for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link project. This Link will provide direct access to Navi Mumbai, upcoming International Airport at Panvel and a convenient gateway to Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the release said.

Water supply scheme

It has also infused ₹581 crore for the ongoing Surya Regional Water Supply Scheme, which has been undertaken to provide bulk water supply to Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporations and also for some Rental Housing Schemes in the area.

An allocation of ₹1,290 crore has been made for the development of the road network in the Mumbai region, the statement said.

A Labour Welfare Fund for the workers deployed on Metro Projects will be created by MMRDA.

This Fund will be raised through the various penal actions taken against the MMRDA contractors for accidents causing light, grievous and fatal injuries, reporting accidents with a delay or willfully suppressing them.

Quoting MMRDA Commissioner, UPS Madan the statement added

“This is not only to press contractors to take adequate safety measures during the construction but also to take care of the workers and their family members by compensating them in case of any mishaps. MMRDA will soon draft a policy based on, which the affected and his family can be compensated.”
