The South-West monsoon has announced its timely onset over the South Andaman Sea, some parts of the South Bay of Bengal and the Nicobar Islands on Saturday afternoon.

The onset was declared the after ascertaining signal features such as strengthening and deepening of cross-equatorial monsoon flows over the Andaman Sea.

The timely onset of the monsoon over the extreme South-East Bay does not necessarily be replicated over the mainland (Kerala coast) nor indicate its orderly performance during the June-September rain season.

Signal features

Westerly winds have strengthened in the lower levels of the atmosphere (upto 28 km/hr) and deepened (upto six km) over the South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands and southern parts of the South Bay.

There has been persistent cloudiness from Wednesday onwards over the South Andaman Sea, adjoining South Bay and the Nicobar Islands, noted India Met Department (IMD) declaring the monsoon onset.

An east-west shear zone of monsoon turbulence runs along across the South Bay, the Nicobar Islands and the South Andaman Sea, it added in a special bulletin issued on Saturday afternoon.

Conditions are favorable for further advance of the monsoon into some more parts of the South Bay, the North Andaman Sea and the Andaman Islands during the next four days.

Rains to escalate

Widespread rainfall has occurred over the Nicobar Islands during the last two days. There has been enhanced cloudiness and rainfall in association with a persisting cyclonic circulation over the past couple of days.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall at most places over the Nicobar Islands with heavy rainfall at isolated on Saturday and Sunday and light to moderate rainfall at many places from Monday to Wednesday.

Light to moderate rainfall at a few places very likely on Saturday, many places on Sunday, and at most places with heavy rainfall at isolated places from Monday to WEdnesday over the Andaman Islands.

Strong winds with speed reaching up to 40 km/hr and gusting to 50 km/hr are likely over the South Andaman Sea, the Nicobar Islands and adjoining South Bay on Saturday and Sunday.

Similar conditions are forecast also over the North Andaman Sea, the Andaman Islands and the adjoining South Bay and the South Andaman Sea from Monday to Wednesday.
