In a wired world, what matters is not your ability to produce a quality product or a service, nor is it driven by teamwork, says Ramnath, a management expert.

However, absence of either of these makes you irrelevant in the marketplace. What differentiates good organisations from great ones is the process cost optimisation or innovation through team work, he said

Ramnath was delivering the BL club lecture, sponsored by the State Bank of Hyderabad on ‘Excellence through teamwork’ at St Pauls College of Management & IT, Ibrahimpatnam.

For organisations to differentiate themselves, remain competitive and make sustainable profit in a wired world, the possibility seems only through optimisation of process cost or through innovation.

Both these can occur only if people in various functions not only work together but also efficiently taking ownership which enables teams to synergise, Ramnath said.

Organizations are run by managements and management is a process. The inputs components to management include: manpower, material, technology and information. This input goes through a process of value addition leading to an output which is either a product or a service. The feedback loop enables corrective action to the subsequent input signal, he explained.

The input components can be universally sourced in a web enabled world. The output components are driven by the market. For example if you want to start a company, you have access to information, technology, material and manpower through the web. The product or service you provide from this company is driven by the customer because he also has access to information to enable him to take an educated decision.

Teamwork is working together towards a common goal. Teamwork efficiency is working together towards a common goal subordinating personal prominence to efficiency of the whole. Here, the individual is by himself/herself efficient and also able to connect efficiently with the environment outside, even if it means sacrificing his/her personal prominence.
